Ask a question
Type into the question box and press Enter. Any of these work:
- A question in your own wordsWhat is gross income?
- The workspace finds documents that use those terms and quotes their text.
- A Code sectionsection 1362
- Finds the section and documents that cite it.
- An exact phrase"qualified appraisal"
- Matches those words in the document text.
- A document number202631001
- Opens that ruling when it is in the library.
Choose a document type in the question box to narrow the search, or limit results by release date from the Search page.
Read cited answers
Each answer quotes the retrieved source text, numbered to match its document in the Sources list. Page and section links open the original at that place. When no retrieved text supports an answer, the workspace says so instead of guessing.
Follow-up questions stay in the same conversation. A question about the documents you already have, such as “what page is that on?”, reuses them. A new question searches again and adds another answer.
When you open a cited document, its Answer tab continues the latest question from the conversation, and follow-ups asked there are answered from that document.
Read documents
Documents open to the original PDF when one is available. Move between pages with the page controls, zoom to fit the page or width, and select text to copy it. Switch to readable text or source text at any time.
Pages transcribed from a scan are labeled as transcriptions, not official text. Download the original to keep the published document.
Compare documents
Select two to five documents in your results, then choose Compare to review them side by side. Each comparison field links to the page or section that supports it.
Folders and updates
Save documents into research folders to keep work for a client or issue in one place, shared with your workspace. Archive a folder when the work is done; you can restore it later.
The Updates page lists documents recently added to the library.
Authority and status
IRS rulings are issued to one taxpayer and cannot be cited as precedent. A search match is not authority.
AI summaries and answers are generated text that cite the pages they come from.
