Cookie Policy

This Cookie Policy explains how Virtus Professional Services LLC (“we”, “us”) uses cookies and similar technologies on the Virtus website and research workspace. It is part of our Terms of Use and should be read with our Privacy Notice, which explains how we handle personal information more generally.

Cookies are small text files a website asks your browser to store and send back on later visits. Session cookies are deleted when you close your browser; persistent cookies last until a set time or until you delete them. First-party cookies are set by the site you are visiting; third-party cookies are set by a different website, often for advertising or tracking across sites.

Every cookie Virtus sets is a first-party cookie. We do not allow other companies to set cookies on our site.

Strictly necessary

These cookies are needed to sign you in and keep your account secure. They cannot be read by scripts on the page and are sent only over secure connections. Without them you cannot sign in.

  Keeps you signed in.

  Ends after 30 minutes without activity and never lasts more than 12 hours. Removed when you sign out.

• project6110.oauth_nonce

  Set when you choose Google, Microsoft, or company sign-in, to confirm that the response belongs to the sign-in you started.

  10 minutes. Removed when sign-in finishes.

• __Secure-project6110.pending_mfa

  Holds a two-step verification check while you complete it.

  5 minutes. Removed when the check finishes.

Functionality

We do not use cookies to remember preferences. Your appearance, sidebar, and document-view choices are kept in your browser’s storage instead, as described in section 4.

Analytics and performance

We count page views with our own tool, on our own website. It sets no cookies and stores nothing in your browser. For each page view it records the page address without search terms or other query text, the domain of the website that referred you, your country as determined from your connection, and whether you are on a phone, tablet, or computer. It does not store your IP address.

To count unique visitors, it combines your IP address and browser details with a random value that changes every day and keeps only the resulting one-way code. The daily value is then deleted, so the code cannot be used to identify you or to link your visits across days. Browsers that send Global Privacy Control are not counted at all. Visit records are kept for about 13 months.

Targeting and advertising

We do not use targeting or advertising cookies, and we do not allow advertising networks or social media plugins on our site.

Browser storage (local storage and session storage) works like a cookie but stays in your browser and is not sent to us with each request. Virtus uses it for the following:

• virtus.ui.v1.theme, virtus.ui.v1.rail.collapsed, virtus.ui.v1.rail.groups, virtus.ui.v1.reader.view, virtus.ui.v1.reading, virtus.ui.v1.migration

  Local storage. Remembers your appearance setting, whether the sidebar and its groups are open, how documents open, and your reading settings (text size, font, line length, reading theme, and keyboard shortcuts).

  Until you change the setting or clear site data.

• virtus.pdf-annotations.v1:…

  Local storage. Keeps the highlights and notes you add to an original document, one entry per document, on this device only.

  Until you remove them or clear site data.

• project-6110.local-matters.v1, project-6110.local-updates.v1

  Local storage. Keeps research folders and which updates you have read when those features store them on this device.

  Until you remove them or clear site data.

• tsr-scroll-restoration-v1_3

  Session storage. Remembers where you were on each page so the back button returns you to the same place.

  Removed when you close the browser tab.

Browsers that used an earlier version of the site may also hold the same preferences under older names beginning with “project-6110”. We do not use tracking pixels or advertising identifiers.

We do not load scripts, pixels, or cookies from other companies on our pages. Some actions take you to another company’s website, which sets its own cookies under its own policies:

• signing in with Google, Microsoft, or your company’s sign-in, which happens on the sign-in page of that company or of the company that runs sign-in for us;
• paying, managing a subscription, or viewing an invoice on our payment processor’s pages; and
• following a link to an official government website, such as irs.gov.

We do not control those cookies. Check the other website’s own policies.

You can block or delete cookies and clear site data in your browser settings. These pages explain how:

We do not show a cookie consent banner because we use no advertising, targeting, or analytics cookies; the cookies we set are needed for the service you ask for.

We honor Global Privacy Control. If your browser sends it, your visits are not counted, and we treat it as a request to opt out of any sale or sharing of personal information.

If you block our cookies, you will not be able to sign in. If you clear site data, you will be signed out, your appearance and layout preferences will reset, and highlights, notes, and any other records kept only on that device will be permanently removed.

Some US state laws, including California’s, give residents the right to opt out of the sale of personal information or its sharing for targeted advertising. We do not sell personal information or use cookies to share it for targeted advertising, so there is no cookie-based sale or sharing to opt out of. Virtus is operated from the United States and is designed for United States federal tax research. If you visit from another country, the cookies and browser storage described here work the same way, and your information is processed in the United States as described in the Privacy Notice. Local law may give you additional rights; write to admin@virtusprofessionalservices.com to use them.

We will update this policy when the cookies or storage we use change. The policy shows its effective date so you can identify the current version, and we will notify workspace administrators of material changes.
